ABSTRACT

Good communication skills are essential for all health professionals. Non-verbal communication is emotionally expressive and so any discourse appealing to the receiver's emotions will have a persuasive impact. Communication is a core clinical skill essential to clinical competence. Organisational communication occurs within a particular social system composed of interdependent groups attempting to achieve commonly recognised goals. The behavioural style paradigm is an important reference point for evaluating team dynamics. The best and most productive interpersonal relationships and communications occur when two styles become complementary with each individual's strengths, thereby compensating for the weaknesses of the other. The basis of communication in management has been shown to be different from the type of communication and skills required in the clinical situation. Communication in management has further been affected by the impact of electronic communication which has pervaded healthcare over the past decade.
