ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the reader to organisations that produce health economic information. It familiarises the reader with what specific institutions have available, rather than defining the location of any one piece of information. The chapter concerns the availability and application of secondary data sources rather than primary data gathering. It presents broad categories of national aggregate data. Not surprisingly the main organisation providing data used for an economic evaluation is the Department of Health and its associated bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. National Service Frameworks focus on major health issues. The Health Technology Assessment programme is a national programme of research. Incorporated into National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence is a very specific focus upon health economics and health economic information. Office for National Statistic is the government agency that provides economic and social statistics for England and Wales.
