ABSTRACT

The social worker has a special coordinating role in relation to the Community Care Act and has budgetary control for the social services' contribution to care arrangements. It should be noted that an essential aspect of community rehabilitation, especially for older disabled people living alone at home, is provision of general supportive care. Community physiotherapists are mostly employed by health service trusts but social services may employ some physiotherapists for special projects and services, most commonly to provide assessment and treatment for disabled elderly people in institutional care. The physiotherapist is concerned with physical treatments and advice to improve movement -especially walking - but also standing up, sitting up from a bed, transferring between chair and commode, and managing stairs and steps safely. Occupational therapists may work for health trusts or social services. The role and duties of the occupational therapist vary between these two agencies.
