ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the wide range of services available to older people and their carers in the community. The provision of home helps to new mothers was empowered by the Maternity and Childcare Act 1918. The greater use of private sector providers of home-care services prompted by the Community Care Act, together with a tendency for authorities to charge commercial rates for these services, has increasingly blurred the boundaries between the private and public sectors. Refresher driving courses are available from major schools of motoring and 'Car confidence holidays' from SAGA Holidays. Mobility Advice and Vehicle Information Service provides advice on simple low-cost adaptations to cars for people with disability. Day care in the form of luncheon clubs, social clubs and day centers may be organized by local authorities, voluntary organizations or religious and other cultural groups. Day centers usually take people for a whole day and provide transport.
