ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide the reader with an overall understanding of clinical governance and the utilisation of information technology. It uses the term 'cyberspace' instead of 'online space', which was certainly an attention grabber, but does lean towards an interpretation of computer-game technology. Learning effectiveness is a vital turbolift of clinical governance, and the ability of new technologies integrated into new teaching methodologies to promote effective learning is a crucial development area for all teachers. The shift in the burden of illness from acute to chronic conditions has created a generation of people living with long-term illness, disability and life-limiting conditions. These patients are also undergoing the computer-mediated communication learning curve, albeit as 'expert' patients. Real-time conferencing is a multi-modal approach that uses telecommunications and/or computer equipment to offer a number of teaching modes that all link more than two sites.
