ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the familiarity of traditional ways of looking at palliative and cancer care education. This will be achieved by examining the value of art as a medium for learning about practice, as well as the recognition of artistry in the process of learning. The chapter itself claims to be an art form, created by the distinction, contrast and interweaving of reflective portfolio extracts written in the first person and presented in handwritten font type. The use of art and artistry to discover knowledge, skills, attitudes and emotions in relation to nursing is offered as an alternative approach to presenting meaning, purpose, beliefs and values in relation to practice through artistic representations of reality. The authors share their individual personal reflections on the experience of incorporating art and artistry into the educative process. The learning experience is cognitive and experiential, the educative role is one of facilitation, and the role of the learner is participative.
