ABSTRACT

The Consultation Expertise Model, hereafter referred to as the Model, illustrates in practical terms how the quality of consulting performance may develop over the years, given time for reflection and a commitment to learn from experience. The Model captures several components of consulting expertise. Advanced Consulting presents a schematic representation of what expert family doctors actually do. It avoids tantalising value judgement such as 'excellence', but describes expert behaviours in terms that can be observed day to day. The simulation is subsequently used with doctors in training as well as by experienced practitioners. That aside, it was the discovery of the fingerprinting process that shifted the focus of the Model to providing a useful tool for all practising family doctors. The Consultation Expertise Model has been devised by practitioners for practitioners – it is a doctor-centred model predicated on a patient-centred approach.
