Birth and Childhood Customs

The aim of this chapter is to facilitate better medical care by enhancing the reader’s understanding of Hindu birth and childhood ceremonies. Most British Hindus observe rites of passage (samskaras) that are well documented in their ancient holy books, the Vedas and their corollaries. These rites of passage extend from before conception until well after death and this chapter explores those performed up to adulthood.
