ABSTRACT

A successful portfolio needs to have a definite and logical structure and include a contents page and sections for easy reference. Doctors may be able to organise their own portfolio or employing trusts may define a structure. Doctors employed by commercial organisations will have to take the requirements of their employers into consideration, as well as their own needs. Doctors who work mainly as independent contractors or freelance doctors will have other priorities in setting out goals and learning and development plans – but will still need to convince the appraiser that they are addressing their weaknesses and any professional or local priorities. The General Medical Council sets out standards that must be met as part of the duties of doctors. One of the problems of preparing for appraisal and revalidation as a doctor is the wealth of information and evidence required, and the lack of time to collect and compile it.
