ABSTRACT

In a one-year period 50 participants offered a health screen intervention in Glasgow were individually matched with 50 who were offered standard general practice care only. In the intervention group, 4.80 new clinical needs were identi­ fied, compared with 2.26 in the group receiving standard treatment only. The level of met new health needs was also greater, 3.56 vs. 2.26. The 10 conditions showing the greatest difference in frequency of needs detection between the intervention and standard group were mental ill health, impacted wax, urine infection/prostatism, cataracts/visual impairment, gastro-oesophageal reflux disorder, arthritis, eczema, hearing impairment, hypertension and drug side-effects.
