ABSTRACT

In April 2005, a new National Health Service Contract for Community Pharmacy came into force. This contract formally recognised many of the additional services that had been available for many years as well as setting out a framework for new services, making the future for pharmacy and the public it serves look more exciting. One of the areas where pharmacists can contribute is the promotion of healthy lifestyles, and in particular the prevention and management of obesity. A problem area within men's weight management is how best to target them. A good approach would be to try to reach men in their own surroundings, within the workplace, somewhere they could attend on their own or with work colleagues, combining weight management with blood pressure or cholesterol checks. Although a pharmacist would discuss men worries in confidence and give them the best advice possible, the matter should always be approached with care and consideration.
