ABSTRACT

This chapter explores trends in older men's weight problem rates in the United States of America and Europe, and examines some of the research carried out on the physical and emotional outcomes of such trends. It provides United Kingdom project on older men which examined attitudes to their own health and their relationship with health professionals. The chapter explains some suggestions for health promotion strategies relevant to the lives of men as they age. Clearly, for older men, marital status and history have a strong influence on health risks and healthy behaviours. Racette et al. conclude that increased abdominal adiposity is a strong predictor of insulin resistance in old age, and their findings support the measurement of waist circumference to assess health risk among older adults. It is well documented that men, throughout their lives, are less likely to consult health professionals than are women.
