ABSTRACT

Several factors play a role in the increased obesity in South Asian men. This chapter looks at genetic factors, environmental issues and how cultural influences affect the way men from these communities view themselves and their health. Furthermore, special considerations need to be made when communicating with men from South Asian communities because they do not comprise one homogenous group. However, with appropriate culturally and linguistic sensitive information communicated via suitable channels, awareness building can help South Asian men have an increased understanding of their health and how they can better manage their health conditions. Genetically people from South Asian communities tend to be apple-shaped and are therefore more likely to be at risk of being obese. Diabetes United Kingdom hopes that the campaign will also raise awareness of diabetes generally and make the general public more aware of the condition.
