ABSTRACT

This chapter explains all primary care trusts (PCTs) in England are experiencing the largest organisational change in the history of the National Health Service. With the help of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidelines on obesity some of these difficulties may be resolved, and with the strengthening of the medicine management departments in PCTs, protocols for using anti-obesity drugs in primary care may become more widespread. The drug treatment of obesity has always been difficult to manage in primary care, due to some historic misuse of the early medications and therefore some hesitancy in prescribing at all for this condition. As an example, a Personal Medical Services scheme could be set up and nurse led, working alongside the local pharmacist and dietetics service, linking with educational packages, school dinner services and leisure centre facilities, all aiming their care at overweight and obese men and boys.
