ABSTRACT

The Bradford Health of Men (HoM) team developed and expanded DeVille-Almond's approach, which targeted the 'at risk' and 'hard to reach' groups of men. Health MOTs, or simple health checks, are nothing new. They come in different formats and are available in numerous locations, such as workplaces, leisure centres and general practitioner (GP) surgeries. The MOT package when supplied to large companies has often created a useful referral pathway to weight management and smoking cessation groups led by our team within the workplace. The contact person in a workplace or community venue is often the factor which determines the success of the MOT programme – certainly in terms of the numbers of 'takers' but also in the quality of the individual consultations. With the HoM MOTs it was necessary to hand over responsibility to the individual client to contact his GP or other health professional in the event of a clinical problem.
