ABSTRACT

Traditionally obesity is defined by using the well established body mass index (BMI) indicator. The calculation of height in metres divided by weight in kilograms gives a figure known as the BMI. Obesity is top of the political agenda. The Choosing Health White Paper, attempts to encourage people to eat more healthily, eat less and exercise more. This healthier lifestyle approach was adopted in the Health of Men (HoM) weight management programme which aims to support men for whom excess weight is a problem, offering them advice and support to encourage healthier lifestyles. The method of promoting weight loss groups to men can vary. During an MOT session, names of men can be recorded and these details then forwarded to the workplace coordinator. Posters can be distributed at local health centress, community centres and swimming pools advertising the course details. HoM six-week programme is flexible, responding to the needs and wishes of each group.
