ABSTRACT

Drug use is widespread and, worryingly, is being developed at earlier ages and with an increasing tendency towards ‘polydrug’ use – using more than one drug. Counsellors need to be prepared to work with people who are using, or who have had a history of using, substances. It brings up a range of issues rooted in stereotypical thinking about people who use drugs. Yet the counsellor needs to address their own preconceptions and any judgementalism that may be present for them if they are truly to be able to offer a genuine therapeutic relationship with a member of this client group. Dan is on a methadone prescription. He has had a history of heroin use. Dan has referred himself to a local drug agency where Jeannie is a volunteer counsellor. She has a number of years experience and finds it very rewarding. Dan has been offered eight sessions and he has attended seven.
