ABSTRACT

Simon is the counsellor and he is working with Nick, a young teenager who is struggling with problems of bullying at school. Simon's supervisor is Sarida. Simon is an experienced school counsellor with a particular talent for engaging and working with young people. He sees clients during the day. Simon had recently given a talk about counselling at a school assembly and it had left Nick feeling that he could talk with him. People like Simon were natural listeners and seemed able to relate to people as easily as breathing. He seemed to have boundless warmth for the kids he worked with as well. And Sarida knew that if he had something to say, if something had not felt right in the sessions, he would be keen to get a handle on it. Empathic responses are not always directed by content of what is said, the tone of what is said is also a key aspect of what is communicated.
