ABSTRACT
What follows is a transcript of my Richard Scott Memorial Lecture, given in Edinburgh in June 2001.
Richard Scott, an Edinburgh GP and an energetic supporter of the Royal College of General Practitioners in its early years, was appointed in 1963 to the world’s first Chair of General Practice, at Edinburgh University. The lecture that bears his name was inaugurated in 1989.
