ABSTRACT

Dissatisfaction, as the cartoon on the cover shows, is the natural state of penguins. And of mankind.

The Buddha reckoned that dissatisfaction springs from always wanting things to be other than they are. (Human dissatisfaction, that is; they didn’t have penguins in 600 BC.) We human beings want the things we dislike to hurry up and change, while the things we like we want to stay permanently the same. Some hope. The world obstinately carries on being the way it is whether we like it or not, and it changes in its own good time, not ours. We can’t rely on reversing the natural order to make ourselves happier.
