ABSTRACT

The inseparable relationship between structure and function in living organisms is one of the common themes found in biology. The anatomy and clinical behavior of the lower urinary tract exemplify this immutable link. The following descriptions are intended to offer a brief overview of some clinically relevant aspects of lower urinary tract structure that help us understand the normal and abnormal behavior of this system. Because of the importance of the pelvic floor to lower urinary tract function, comments on the structure of the lower urinary tract organs are followed by a section describing the structure of the pelvic floor as it relates to micturition, continence, and pelvic organ support.
