ABSTRACT

The ethical issues raised by the suggestions of limited resources need to be placed in the context of what actually seems to be happening currently in the provision of medical services for older people, and that is what we shall attempt to do in this chapter. In particular, it is worth devoting some space to the considerable literature suggesting that the predictions of greatly increased healthcare expen diture resulting from the ageing of the population are at the very least greatly exaggerated. If these suggestions are justified, it will put the predictions of an ethical crisis in a different light.
