ABSTRACT

Orientation sessions are essential for all rotations, but are particularly important for cross-disciplinary rotations. These sessions provide an opportunity for introductions and give you the chance to set the tone for the rotation. Take care to avoid overwhelming the resident, and make it clear that they are not expected to be an expert in your area! Reiterate that this is why they are taking the rotation. This approach helps to immediately allay some of the resident's anxiety, and also helps you to build rapport. Provide the resident with written instructions, including call schedules, clinic hours, after-hours coverage, names

phone calls/office notes/protocols), and performance expectations.
