Setting the scene Emily had been born prematurely at 32 weeks’ gestation. After a very difficult start and six weeks on the neonatal intensive-care unit, she was finally discharged. Emily was David and Debbie’s first baby, but they gradually gained confidence in handling her. Both parents had been well prepared for her coming home, and they had also been trained in infant resuscitation prior to her discharge. The family gradually settled into a routine. Emily was beginning to thrive and displaying a very lovable nature, compensating somewhat for the sleepless nights and fraught feeding times.
