ABSTRACT

In recent years GPs have seen some dramatic changes in their indemnity arrangements. Costs of premiums have risen rapidly as the number of claims and their associated legal costs have increased. Traditionally, professional indemnity has been provided by three defence organisations: the Medical Protection Society, the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland and the Medical Defence Union. All three organisations have been in existence for over a century. More recently The St Paul International Insurance Company entered the market in 1999, only to leave three years later after the events of September 11 2001. Recently another insurer has launched a new policy.
