ABSTRACT

Introduction Haemodialysis is undertaken by thousands of people world wide to replace renal function that has been lost due to acute or ‘end stage’ renal disease. In the acute setting, the goals of haemodialysis are to replace, or support, renal function until the kidneys recover. For people with end stage disease, replacement of renal function is ongoing, and ceases only when death, or successful renal transplantation, occurs.
