ABSTRACT

Introduction For peritoneal dialysis to be successful as a treatment for end stage renal failure it requires careful assessment of the patient’s ability to perform the procedure, as well as an estimation of the probable suitability of the peritoneal cavity. It also requires the selection of an appropriate catheter, the correct placement of the catheter and skilled management of the exit site and the catheter during the weeks after it is inserted. Ideally, peritoneal dialysis is selected in time for the patient to receive education about the care of their catheter and for selecting and inserting the catheter prior to the need for dialysis.
