ABSTRACT

The growth of some cancers is dependent on natural hormones and some drugs reduce the levels of these natural hormones. If patients with hormone-dependent cancers are treated with these drugs, the growth of their cancers can be reduced or even stopped. The following cancers many, but not all, rely on natural hormones for their growth. Thyroid cancer depends on a hormone called thyroid stimulating hormone. Tamoxifen commonly used as the first choice in treatment, and often used to prevent return of the breast cancer after successful treatment. Cyproterone, flutamide are used as the first choice for treating prostate cancer. Drugs that suppress these natural hormones can reduce or temporarily stop cancer growth.
