ABSTRACT

Many have tried to define spirituality and found it hard to describe it or list its features. Its simplicity contrasts with the profound effects it has on people. Spirituality is about all those things that shape us and that 'make us tick'. It includes our values and our understanding of the meaning of life and our place in the world. It's about those things that touch us in a way that is not necessarily physical, for example when we see a beautiful sunset or hear a piece of music. It includes a sense of awe and wonder. It is wider than faith, organised religion, new age beliefs or alternative treatments although people do give expression to their spirituality in these ways and find them very helpful. Spirituality can be encouraged in surprising ways, such as painting, playing music, working with clay, visiting an informal garden or a donkey sanctuary.
