ABSTRACT

Islam is the religion of the Muslims; it means literally 'submission', signifying that a Muslim is someone who submits to God's will. Most British Muslims are fairly strict about Islamic law. The present era is that of Muhammad and Islam, but the future – and seventh – era is that of the time of the Messiah when no law will be necessary because truth will prevail everywhere. The two main branches of Islam in the UK are Sunni and Shia, in a roughly 9:1 proportion to each other. Unless a Muslim is totally lapsed', he is unlikely to break away from traditional Islamic attitudes to family, to modesty, to alcohol, to gambling and even to clothes. Islam became a formalised, distinctive religion with its own system of government, law and rules. In Islamic thought, each person is considered to be entrusted with a certain portion of material goods to be used in God's service.
