ABSTRACT

Parents and carers really should consider investing time and money in learning how the Internet works. Many children and teenagers make great use of the Internet as it offers fantastic entertainment and an opportunity to communicate with friends and family both near and far. To most children, worldwide communication is fascinating, and the prospect of being able to send photographs, live video or information to another person halfway around the world instantaneously and build a catalogue of international contacts, can be addictive. Draw comparisons between access to online and non-online pornography, and sexually abusive images of children. Most adolescent males and a lesser number of adolescent females will, at some point, view or attempt to view adult pornography; an even smaller number will view sexually abusive images of children. Adolescents who choose to view sexually abusive images of children will not automatically embark on a lifetime of child sexual abuse; their choice could be made simply on inquisitive grounds.
