ABSTRACT

The age of parents child and the relationship between their child and the abuser may well determine his or her view on reporting the matter to the police or social services. If parent think that their child has not disclosed all there is to tell, do not pressurise their child to disclose further. A more detailed or a more explanatory disclosure may well follow at a later date, when parents child is satisfied that he or she is being believed and his or her account of the events is being taken seriously. Once a disclosure of abuse has been made, for the physical and psychological benefit of parents child, do not allow their child in the company of the alleged abuser, even if supervised. A young child will not have any say in the matter, as the decision is solely that of the parent/carer.
