ABSTRACT

One of the criticisms made by Ole Olsen and Gotsche is that breast cancer mortality is an unreliable outcome, being subject to misclassification of cause of death. The controversy over mammography (MA) was examined by the expert panel that advised the US National Cancer Institute (NCI). The experts decided to revise their original draft and concluded that there was insufficient evidence that mammograms prevent breast cancer deaths. The vast majority of women have been convinced by the massive marketing of MA that they should follow the recommendations of the "experts". The medical establishment in the USA strongly recommends screening for breast cancer with MA for women aged 40–74. Counterbalancing any deaths from breast cancer avoided, MA indisputably causes harm, most notably from false positives that lead to additional diagnostic procedures and anxiety until they can be resolved.
