ABSTRACT

Graham was sitting in the waiting room, it was a Tuesday afternoon and quite quiet in the village surgery. He was thumbing through a magazine, wondering in his own mind what he was doing there. He had been reluctant to come, it wasn’t something he really saw himself as needing. He was 40 years of age, 20 years in the army, the only life he had known, really. He had come out of the army two years ago and at first all had seemed OK. He’d got a job in security. It hadn’t been easy to settle into civilian life, but he had held the job down, but the last six months had become something of a nightmare. He’d lost his confi dence, felt low, suffered anxiety attacks, couldn’t sleep and now he was on sick leave, and had been referred to see a counsellor at his GP surgery.
