The problem of statistical inference In ordinary parlance, two broad categories of statistics are recognised - descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics includes all of the techniques used to present data and to discuss its general configuration. For instance, graphs, histograms, frequency polygons, etc., are all part of descriptive statistics, as are also the measures of central tendency and of dispersion - the parameters, as statisticians call them.
