ABSTRACT

Introduction Multiple sclerosis affects approximately 85 000 people in the United Kingdom and is the most common cause of neurological disability in young adults. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently published management guidelines that highlight the need to improve standards of care offered to people with this condition.1 Health and social care professionals in both primary and secondary care should be informed of the current evidence-based practice in order to optimise their management of people with multiple sclerosis. People with multiple sclerosis must participate fully in decisions on their care.2 This review covers both the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis and the management of acute relapses and begins with a brief overview of the condition.
