ABSTRACT

Intelligence is normally distributed in the population as shown in the bellshaped curve in Figure 1.1. This means that the majority of people in the general population have an IQ of around 100 (the arithmetic mean, or average IQ). Smaller numbers of people have lower or higher IQs, and very small numbers have very high or very low IQs. This creates the bell-shaped curve with the highest numbers clustering around an IQ of 100, and smaller numbers at either extreme. The distribution of intelligence is represented in Chapter 1.
