ABSTRACT

Emotional response will vary both by feelings experienced by the person with the disability themselves, about themselves and by the attitudes and emotional responses of other people around them to the disability. Some people with an acquired disability may have had strong negative feelings about disabled people prior to their own accident or illness and this will affect how they feel about themselves, to be suddenly part of this 'labelled' group. People with disabilities appear to have no more and no less psychosexual problems than anyone else, but may have more sexual difficulties. It is important to explore the emotional and physical factors when there is a sexual problem and disability. When there are physical difficulties there is also usually an emotional factor involved. Although counseling and exploring emotional factors may help to solve the problem these cannot replace a function that is lost due to physical damage or disease.
