ABSTRACT

Couples with infertility problems should be referred together to clinics specialising in the management of infertility with easy access to other relevant specialists such as urologists whenever possible rather than the woman being managed in a general gynaecology clinic and her male partner in a urology clinic. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority's Patients' Guide gives details about the number of treatment cycles undertaken in one year, and the outcomes in terms of pregnancy rates, percentage of multiple pregnancies and live birth rates for each licensed clinic. Some clinics may appear to have lower success rates than others because they have policies to minimise the risk of multiple births or treat an older age group of women. Clinic details give a range between 35 and 50 years, with some clinics specifying different age limits for National Health Service (NHS) and private treatment or for when a woman's own eggs or donated eggs are used in In vitro fertilisation (IVF).
