ABSTRACT

Experience has shown there are a number of critical success factors. The role of the facilitator is vital to the success of the development of the care pathway programme and is mentioned throughout administrative resource guide. A steering group can play a vital role in the project management of the development programme for care pathways. Care pathways are a tool to promote a continuous improvement ethos within an organisation. The time should extend beyond the pilot stage until the essential requirements for maintenance of a care pathway are in place. The development of care pathways across organisation needs to be project-managed, particularly in the early stages. It is advised that a programme steering group be established, which includes executive director members and key stakeholders. The role that ‘hands-on’ staff who deliver the care/treatment to patients/users play in the development and implementation of the care pathways is vital.
