ABSTRACT

Relatives' preparation for bereavement begins in the preceding weeks or months of the person's terminal illness and not at the time of death. This period of preparation also provides an opportunity for nursing staff to support and counsel relatives. We can encourage them to express feelings and fears and keep them fully informed of any changes in the patient's condition. There may be opportunities to encourage family members to be more open with each other and to listen to their anxieties about the future.
