ABSTRACT
A terminal illness may be defined as one for which no cure is available and which will bring about the death of the person in the fairly near future. However, it is not always easy to recognise when the terminal phase of an illness has been reached. Our care of the dying begins at the time of the fatal diagnosis and not just within the last weeks or days of life.
