ABSTRACT
In communicating the diagnosis of a terminal illness or a poor prognosis, most medical and nursing staff are likely to have experienced problems. Feelings of inadequacy, concern about the patient's reactions, together with the constraints of team policy on giving information, may result in nurses avoiding rather than facing up to the issues.
