ABSTRACT

The birth of a first child, in particular, forms a 'rite of passage' from young adulthood to maturity for both parents. It is exciting and challenging, but also loaded with uncertainty and anxiety. It represents a loss of freedom and of self-interest, as well as a gain. Because of the emotional investment the mother brings to the first interview, she will probably relate better to the midwife she first encounters than to others. Later in the pregnancy, further exploration could be made of the mother's expectations of labour, and any particular fears she may have. She may also benefit from forward planning about suitable help in the home postpartum. The educators may be midwives, health visitors, physiotherapists or other paramedicals with their own individual orientation about what and how to teach. Some professional carers have their own anxieties about becoming involved with their clients on a more emotional level.
