ABSTRACT

The Royal College of General Practitioners' Scientific Foundation Board was established in 1976 and has charitable status. The Board's capital comes from two major sources: general fund and special funds. The Board's members are appointed by the Council of the RCGP and the majority are members of the College. Some are appointed from outside the College's membership, in particular those with a special expertise in statistics and the social sciences. All members of the Board are experienced researchers. Members of the Board examine the personal information provided by the applicant to assess the amount of research experience he or she has and the support facilities to which they will have access while doing their project. The assessment process leads to a number of possible outcomes. The outcomes are: unconditional funding with no reservations, unconditional funding with comments/suggestions, funding subject to certain conditions, moderate amendments, interview, and resubmission and rejection.
