ABSTRACT

The Association of University Departments of General Practice (AUDGP) is a thriving coalition of medical and non-medical colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines; all have an interest in the delivery of primary care to the population. Primary care is important because it functions between self-care of common problems in the community, and the use of expensive secondary and tertiary resources. The AUDGP has proposed a career structure for academic general practice and is contributing to discussions on a parallel structure for GPs involved in postgraduate education. The AUDGP is the professional association of members of academic departments of general practice, or their equivalent, in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland. Membership of the Association is open to all full-time and part-time academic staff of university departments of general practice, whether medically qualified or not. The composition of the membership of departments of general practice, and of the Association has altered dramatically over the years.
