ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the way mothers described how they felt about their infants, the sudden loss of their babies, and how they continued to express their love for their babies. It explores the ongoing love story of mothering, albeit interrupted by the infant's sudden death. The chapter focuses on how the bereaved parents in the study represented their infant to other people and spoke about their baby. It also considers the ways in which the mothers made their ongoing relationship with their infants visible via the funeral, objects and the infants' graves. Mothers are constantly engaged in working to mediate the way that their children are presented to the world, contextualising their infant's behaviour and helping others to see their children in the best possible way, as well as seeking to minimise the disturbances their infants make, and attending to their needs.
