ABSTRACT

This chapter summarises the developing evidence base for effective working alongside people experiencing mental health–substance use problems. It explores issues of mental health–substance use when working alongside people experiencing a first or onset of psychosis, looks at ways of influencing professional attitudes and values towards these individuals and helping to enhance knowledge and skills. Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug consumed by young people in the UK, and among those attending early intervention mental health services. Professionals working in early intervention mental health teams need a functional knowledge of cannabis and how it affects mental health. Practical ways will be suggested for engaging young people with a first or onset of mental distress that are using substances. Some young people use substances because they can change how they feel, often in a more ‘predictable’ manner than other things in their lives.
