ABSTRACT

The Prison Service serves the public by keeping in custody those committed by the courts. It is society's duty to look after them with humanity and help them to lead law-abiding and useful lives, both in custody and after release. The aim of the Prison Service's Health Care Directorate is that the health care needs of prisoners should be met at a standard at least equal to that of the NHS. Prison Medical Officers (PMOs) provide morning surgeries but may also undertake longer assessments of complex problems. Minor surgery may be offered in the prison health care centre, or arrangements may be made for attendance at an NHS hospital. Immunisation programmes, particularly for hepatitis B are offered. All inmates are offered education on HIV/AIDS. Part-time PMOs are responsible for pointing out to the Governor factors affecting the health of both prisoners and staff working within the prison.
