ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explore the pertinent issues and provide a range of teaching strategies for educationalists delivering cancer and palliative care education that is specifically related to health and social care policies. The health and social care policy processes in relation to cancer and palliative care are particularly relevant at the moment. All healthcare professionals involved in the delivery of care in these specialties need to heighten their awareness of public policy processes so that they become more active in policy making and politics, whether at a clinical, organisational, national or global level. The chapter focuses on politics, policy, processes, people and education in a UK context. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence said in draft guidance that Herceptin should be prescribed for women with early-stage breast cancer who could benefit from it. Final guidance was published in July 2006.
